another vs one other and was vs were

    Hi all,

I wrote a paragraph like this:

In 2011 Sudan Telecom provided both fixed-line telephone services and mobile
telephone services. There were also another fixed-line operator and
two other mobile operators in the country.

But my editor, who is a native speaker, changed the above paragraph to the following:

In 2011 Sudan Telecom provided both fixed-line telephone services and mobile
telephone services. In addition, there was one other fixed-line operator and
two other mobile operators in the country.

I don't quite understand why she changed "another" to "one other" and used "was" instead of were.
(Earlier I used to think that one other should always be combined to another.)

"was" and "one other" are correct.

This is one of those rare occasions when I do not agree with bhaisahab. I would write 'one other, but I think 'another' is acceptable.I think 'was' is incorrect. There were three operators

I think "was" is correct. It refers to the one fixed line operator. There were also two other mobile operators. I agree that "another" is acceptable, but I much prefer "one other".

In that case the two other mobile operators seem to be just hanging there.

I would definitely put "was". "There were another.." sounds and looks horrible to me! I also prefer "one other" since it's listing the amount of things - one of this and two of that.

Re: another vs one other and was vs were

If you changed the order and put the two mobile operators first, then you have "were" immediately before the two mobile operators, and it applies not only to the two, but also to the other fixed-line operator. It doesn't sound as off to have "were" before two as it does before "one."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
