    part or some?

    When I don't know the specific number, should I use part or some?

    Part of the students took the course.
    Or:

    Some of the students took the course.

    Use some.

    You can be a bit more specific and say 'a few of the students' or 'a lot of the students, but not part.

    It seems to me that part is more often used for uncountable or collective things, like crowd, paper, population, agreement, etc., etc..

    That's right in some circumstances but personally, I say "some of the crowd", "some of the population", not "part of".
