Can you guys help me with this sentence??

If the highest court in the land doesn't reach out to minority law clerks, this sends the wrong message to corporate America.

What does it mean? I don't see any logic here. And what is "the highest court in the land"?

    Very appreciate.
    Michael from China.

The Supreme Court would be "the highest court in the land" in the US.

It's talking about what is called "Affirmative Action," which is seeking out and hiring people who happen to have a skin color that was historically discriminated against.

It is saying that if the Supreme Court does not try to set an example by hiring law clerks "of color" then business will think it is OK to hire people without making sure they have the right number of people with various skin colors.

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello:

    (1) The "highest court" in the States is the Supreme Court.

    (a) Those nine persons can decide whether or not the Congress has obeyed the Constitution.

    (2) So if the Supreme Court does not hire minority [non-white] law clerks [to help those nine judges], then the fact that even the

Supreme Court does not hire minority law clerks will "tell" corporate America [big, powerful companies] that they do not have to

    hire minority employees, either.

    (a) But if the Supreme Court hires many minority employees, then corporate America will get the "message" that it is a good idea to

hire more minority employees. In other words, the person who wrote that sentence thinks that the Supreme Court should set the

    example.

    *****

In the United States of America, the majority of people are of European ancestry at the present time. According to some government studies, by the year 2050, white people will be below 50%. So one of today's minorities may become the majority by the end of this century. (The three major minorities are: Asian people, African-American people. and Hispanic/Latino people.)
