Is a Hybrid Car Worth the Price?
Hybrid cars refer to vehicles, which use two or several different power sources to move (Are Hybrid Cars worth It?). It combines electric motors with internal combustion engines to move. This means that these cars could be demanding because of the combination of different technologies to produce a hybrid model. It is obvious that each technology has its own demands. Therefore, it is vital to assess whether making such a weighty procurement is worth the price. This paper acts as an examination of the worthiness of purchasing a hybrid car to examine whether the money spent on purchasing it is worthwhile. The argument in this paper is based on the thesis “Hybrid cars are not worth the price because the total costs are high.”
A comparison between a hybrid and a non-hybrid car shows a significant difference between the total costs of purchasing the two cars (Are Hybrid Cars worth It?). The approximated cost difference in five years time is over five thousand dollars, with the hybrid car having higher costs than the standard car. There were both positive and negative signs in hybrid car sales in 2011 (Motavalli). Future hybrids might face increasing competition from cheaper gas and fuel-sipping cars (Motavalli). As more buyers continue to purchase fuel-efficient cars in the United States, only 35% of them opt to purchase another hybrid vehicle after returning to the market in the year 2011 (Hirsch). This background information clearly indicates that there could be a dilemma with the value of hybrid cars.
A financial analysis by Go Insurance Rates (Are Hybrid Cars worth It?) clearly shows that the total costs associated with a hybrid car are higher than those of a non-hybrid car are. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to term hybrid cars as worth the price in respect to the total costs involved. For instance, in the comparison between a standard Ford Escape and a hybrid Ford Escape, the total amount of down payment and the operation costs for the hybrid are extremely high, despite fuel efficiency. The calculations given by Go Insurance Rates (Are Hybrid Cars worth It?) show a cash difference of over five thousand dollars. This would cause a buyer to think twice before purchasing a hybrid car.
Another issue that would cause buyers to question the worth of a hybrid car is fuel efficiency. People might generalize the idea that all hybrid cars are fuel effective. It is worth it to remember that the word “hybrid” does not necessarily mean fuel efficiency (Motavalli). Some of the current versions of hybrid cars such as SUVs and Luxury cars do not save much on fuel. David Champion a car tester for Consumer Reports did a test, and it cleary shows that hybrid car simply does not not mean fuel effective. “We found very similar results on the highway,” said Champion, “But instead of 60 miles per gallon we only got 35 miles per gallon in the city. So it’s a huge difference.” (Thompson). This is because of the forced decisions to pay for features that add cost and weight. This would also make a potential buyer question whether hybrid cars are worth their price.
Nevertheless, examining the value of hybrid cars in respect to environmental concerns can prove some worth of their prices (Are Hybrid Cars worth It?). Hybrid cars are fuel-efficient compared to non-hybrid cars. If we consider the issue of environmental pollution, hybrid cars are the best because they do not burn fuel as regular cars. In addition, the automatic start and shut off feature ensures effective conservation of energy hence reducing misuse of resources. This can out win the issue of total costs and fuel efficiency. Therefore, a potential buyer might find it worth it to purchase the car.
In conclusion, if we assess the worth of a hybrid car in terms of total costs, it would be correct to argue that a hybrid car is not worth the price. The car would only be useful if used for a significant period. However, if the concern is all about environmental issues, a hybrid car would be an excellent option. This is because hybrid cars are environmental friendly and do not pollute the environment.
