    regarding the verb 'regret'

    Hello

Does this question, "Did David regret he couldn't finish the painting?" make sense?

Suppose I want to know if David felt sorry for not having finished the painting. How can I possibly make the question?

Exactly the way you wrote the question is how you would express wanting to know whether David felt sorry for not having finished the painting.

Did David wish he had finished the painting?
    Or
Did David wish he could have finished the painting?

I would say "Did David regret not having finished the painting?" You could say "Did David regret that he couldn't..." But I prefer the former.
