    form and account for

    Hello,

Describing some bar charts, a student used the following phrases:

"...and four years ago annual sales increased by ...%, forming $ 2.2 m"
" ... accessories underwent a slump in sales and accounted for only $ 1.2 m"

I don't feel 'form' is appropriate here, and there's something I don't like about 'accounted for' either. I feel it should be used to talk about a part of a total amount, not just stating how high a figure is.

    Could anybody comment, please?

    Thank you.

I don't like 'forming'. I'd go for 'amounting to' or 'reaching'. I agree with your reservation about 'accounted for', but it's possible if the total has just been mentioned, in my opinion.

5jj, thanks! Do you mean the total of 1.2m? I had doubts as it's the total for one company division only, not the total for all the divisions. I'll leave it as it is.

I meant the overall total, as in: " Company profits increased to 137m, but Accessories underwent a slump in sales and accounted for only $ 1.2 m".

    Re: form and account for

Unfortunately, the report doesn't mention the overall profit, only sales figures by division.
