HELP WITH WORD STRESS OF THESE PARTICULAR WORDS!

I need some help on the stress of these particular words. I only know about word stress when referring to entire sentences not single words. I would be highly grateful if someone could help me out. :) Thanks.

Mark the stress on the word below. Example: hospital / understand

    1. allow 2. prediction 3. controversial

    4. photograph 5. photographic 6. photographer

    7. prefer 8. preference 9. record (noun)

    10. record (verb)

Re: HELP WITH WORD STRESS OF THESE PARTICULAR WORDS!

    Welcome to Using English.

If you want American pronunciation, you can go to www.m-w.com and click on the little red microphone button to hear the words pronounced. I'm sure other online dictionaries offer this, but m-w is the one I use.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Not homework, one of the sections from a pre-task application for an English course. I'm not looking for exact answers just some tips on how to tackle word stress on particular words. :(

Re: HELP WITH WORD STRESS OF THESE PARTICULAR WORDS!

Most good dictionaries will help. If you go to prediction noun - definition in British English Dictionary & Thesaurus - Cambridge Dictionary Online

, for example, the entry for prediction begins:

    prediction noun /prɪˈdɪk.ʃən/ [C or U]

There is a link to the spoken pronunciation of the word, and you have the phonemic transcription, though you don't even need that - the thing like an apostrophe before the second syllable tells that that it is that syllable that is stressed.

A few years ago I wanted to use an Am E web page (as the stress, though not the pronunciation) is often the same. And I recorded some British articles to 'make the links work).

But it's a WAV file (not uploadable on this site) and the quality isn't great anyway. I'll try to tweak it a bit, and will post it tomorrow. (If I forget, remind me! )

This site demonstrates British and North American pronunciations side by side.

To judge from Rover's reply, you don't need this. But...
