idea + a word beginning with a vowel

Hello, everyone!:-D

Well, I have a question as to the pronunciation of - the word 'idea' + another word beginning with a vowel.

Please read and pronounce the sentence below.

1. I was intimidated by the whole idea of Cambridge.
2. The idea is this.

When I was in the UK (many years ago), I often heard people pronounce:

'idea of' as 'aɪˈdiə rəv'
'idea is' as 'aɪˈdiərɪz'

There is no 'r' there, though.
Is it an attempt to make it easier to pronouce?

How do YOU pronounce those sentences above?
