    What does "Mets" mean?

    Context:

In modern parlance, we have cheapened the significance of
the word "miracle." We speak of "miracle drugs," "miracle
diets," "Miracle on Ice," or even the "miracle Mets." But of
course, that's not the original intended meaning of the word.
More accurately, a miracle is an event that appears inexplicable
by the laws of nature and so is held to be supernatural in origin.

I've never come across "miracle Mets".

1969 New York Mets season - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's the other baseball team from New York City. In only their 8th season they won the World Series. In all of their previous seasons they lost more games than they won and never were close to winning any championship.

Oh, and "Mets" is a shortened version of "Metropolitans."

    Cool stuff.
    Thank you.

So "Miracle metropolitans" refers to "wonderful big city citizens who create miracles?"
