    Can you tell us?

    Teacher, can I say this:

Can you tell us about your problems and your present financial situation in a brief letter.

Yes. You can also add a question mark.

    Re: Can you tell us?

Thank you, Teacher. How about this sentence?

Can you write us a brief letter about your problems and current financial situation?

    Re: Can you tell us?

My problem with this formation is that the answer can be "Yes." Yes, I'm able to write you a letter.

It doesn't provide you with the information you need, though.

I prefer "Please write us a brief letter describing..."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
