Smile next to the real thing

Hello. I don't quite get the meaning of these two underlined parts in this context below.
    Please help! Thank you.

    -------------------------------
    * Dan, the speaker is a champion on a radio quiz show. (he is actually not Scotish.)
Mac is a challenger.(He is Scotish.) And Baz is a radio show host.

"Are you a footballing man, Dan? Do you follow the MIGHTY Killie?"
"No, I'm not really into footall."
"NOT into football? Are you SURE you're Scotish?" says Baz.
What does he mean? Can he tell my accent is fake? Next to the real thing, I sound as false as Baz
    doing his terrible Highlander impression.
"If I was from Killie, I wouldn't be into football either," says Mac, laughing.
"Ooh, now THERE'S a gauntlet being slapped down if I ever heard one!"

Re: next to the real thing

1 His false accent sounds artificial when there's a real one to compare it with.
2 Throwing the gauntlet down is challenging someone- the person is suggesting that Kilmarnock are such a bad football team that if he came from there, he wouldn't like football either.
