    at the read

    Hi

I don't understand the underlined part in the following context, could anyone help me out? Thank you in advance.

"Mary was seriously sick. She kept throwing up and had high fever. Her mother had to sit and keep an eye on her with a towel at the read."

What does "at the read" mean?

    Re: at the read

To clarify, "at the read" is a typo, an error. It does not mean "At the ready" but that's what it should say.

    Re: at the read

And "at the ready" means "ready to use as soon as it's needed."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
