"They left the Naomi in charge of the children for a week."
What does "left" mean in this sentence?
Is it okay to understand as "gave"?

You have an extra "the." It's just "They left Naomi in charge..."

It means that they have placed Naomi in charge of the children. It's past tense of "leave," as in "we will leave you in charge."
