    identified/identification

the illegal immigrants gave false names because they didn't want to be identified

A For fear of being identified, the illegal immigrants gave false names
B In order to avoid identification, the illegal immigrants gave false names

Why is A the only correct option here? The question was to find the one with the closest meaning to the original but I don't see how B is out of the question.

Please quote the text more accurately, vkhu.
For me, B is the better answer.

A would have been better if the original had read
'The illegal immigrants gave false names because they were afraid of being identified'.

    Re: identified/identification

I agree- I would have chosen B as the closer answer.

    Re: identified/identification

And I make three. There is no mention of "fear" or "frightened" or "afraid" in the original so I would not have chosen A. The original simply says "they didn't want to be identified" which is more or less the same as "they wanted to avoid being identified" making B much more appropriate.

No doubt, we all assume that they are quite rightly afraid of being identified because they are illegal immigrants, but that is not actually stated in the original and so should not form part of the answer.

    Re: identified/identification

It does indeed say "illegal immigrants" in the original post.

I think either answer is appropriate. Illegals obviously have a reason to fear being properly identified.

    Re: identified/identification

Without wishing to start any kind of contentious debate, I have rather extensive experience in that area and I can safely say that, in the UK, most illegal immigrants are afraid of nothing, least of all being identified/punished/deported.

    Re: identified/identification

I see. The way I read it I thought you were denying that it said "illegal."

    Re: identified/identification

No, not at all. I said that because they were illegal immigrants, we all appear to have assumed that they were afraid, but it didn't say that in the piece, so it shouldn't (in my opinion) form part of the answer.
