    is this sentence OK?

    The style guides I follow require a comma after "2012" (which I know was not the point of your question).
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    I am not a great follower of style guides, but I would use a comma there, too.
