    hiding or hidden

_______in that cave, the thief tried to avoid capture.

    A. Hiding B. Hidden

    I think both are correct.

    Am I right?

    Thanks

    Jason

    Re: hiding or hidden

    * Not a teacher

I would go just for B. hidden. I would use A. hiding in a context similar to these:

Hiding in that cave was a good way to avoid capture.
By hiding in that cave, the thief tried to avoid capture.
    Not a teacher.
    Not a native speaker.
Just a language lover who is majoring in English.

    Hi, SirGod!
Thank you for your input in another thread.

    I'd go for A.Hiding.
I think it is called 'Participial Construction.'
I can't explain it in English well, so I'll wait for some other teachers to reply.

    Re: hiding or hidden

Both are okay One describes his state (he is in a state of being hidden), the other describes what he is doing (he is hiding).

There is no real difference in meaning.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I didn't know 'somebody is hidden' is possible, but now I understand it is possible in the proper context.
I'd like to ask a question here if I may.

In the sentence given above, if it's passive, could it mean something like:
'The thief was being provided with a shelter(the cave) by somebody else(or some organization that he belonged to)'?

    Thank you in advance.

    Re: hiding or hidden

If it's passive, that would be logical, but if it's an adjective, then the thief could have done it without external help.
