1. How dare you trespass on my property?" he cried in a threatening voice.

2. How dare you trespass on my property!" he cried in a threatening voice.

I wonder whether I should use a question mark or an exclamation mark. I am confused because the word 'cried' makes me think that an exclamation mark is required. On the other hand, it seems to be a question, which would require me to use a question mark.

This question appears to be similar to the one I posted about ten days ago, if I remember correctly.

May I know which punctuation mark I should use?

Many thanks.

It is an exclamation that does not expect a response.

Thanks, billmcd.

Just to confirm that I understand your correctly - an exclamation mark should be used.

I agree that it should be an exclamation mark. This is not a question which requires a response - it is a rhetorical question. Saying "How dare you trespass on my property!" is different from asking "How do you dare trespass on someone else's property?", a question that you might reasonably ask of someone who regularly does so. You might actually be interested to learn what makes them brave enough to do it.

So "How dare you ..." is different from "How do you dare ...?"
