    learn how to vs learn to

    "Our course work involved learning how to fix computer parts"

    Is the word "how" in that sentence really necessary?

    Then how come this sentence is considered wrong:
    "He has learnt to install this electric equipment."

    I was told there must be a "how" preceding "to install" or else the sentence has no meaning.
