    as when

Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to(for example:"the hand took hold of the ball"), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed(in this example, actually taking hold of the ball)

Why does the author use "as when" when one of them can make sense here?

    Is there any particular meaning?

What does the last sentence mean?

    thanks

The same neurons fired when someone read a sentence about a hand taking a ball as they (the neurons) did when the person actually picked up the ball.

Person reads a sentence about a hand picking up a ball - neurons A, B and C fire.
Person actually picks up a ball - neurons A, B and C fire.
