Which word do you not understand: women, abusive, or relationships?

As always, it is very helpful if you post the full sentence in which you saw a phrase you are querying, along with the context. In this case, it would be good to know that you have looked up the definitions of the three relevant words and, having done that, what it is which still confuses you.

That is not a complete sentence, though it could be a headline. if it is a headline, then the article itself should give you a clue. Have you looked up the definitions of the words, as ems suggested? If not, start here: OneLook: General dictionary sites

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello, Shamsiyan:

As you know, "The women who are in abusive relationships" is NOT a complete sentence. It needs to read

    something like:

The women who are in abusive relationships range in age from 18 to 80.

And this means that those women are living with someone who abuses them physically, verbally, or both.

I have read that some women (and men!) stay in abusive relationships because they often think: It's better to have

a spouse (husband or wife) who mistreats me than to be all alone in this world. Also, some women may feel that if they

leave their abusive husbands, they will become homeless. And I have also read that some women stay in abusive

relationships because they (the women) somehow feel that they deserve the bad treatment that they are receiving.

Here in the United States, we say that they have very low self-esteem (they do not respect themselves).
