4. Once you learned to read you will be forever free.

"Once you learned to read you will be forever free"
That was what "Frederick Douglass" (an American social reformer, orator, writer & statesman) said. The story is about like this.

One of the basic tenets of how to create a slave was "Keep the body strong" (to do the hard work) and "Keep the mind weak".

Slaves were not allowed to read or be taught to read. There's an old story about a slave who secretly learned to read. If you were found out, you would be beaten or killed. One day, he was asked to drive his master into town on the wagon. As they came upon a busy intersection, there was a "STOP" sign. Now, the slave could read the sign. If he stopped, the master would know the slave could read and would take harsh action against him. If the slave ignored the sign, surely they would end up in an accident with other travelers. Now, here's a dilemma! What did the slave do? He ran the sign! Yes, they ran into another wagon. The master asked, "Didn't you see the sign?" The slave replied, "Nawssuh. I didn't see no sign. I's can't read suh!".

Hope it could help
