    proved rather incompetent

I thought she was the right person for the position, yet it turned out that she was quite useless

A I was mistaken about her suitability for the position, since she proved rather incompetent
B Because I was expecting her to be competent, I was shocked to see her perform rather badly

A is the answer but isn't it supposed to be "proved to be"? How come there is an adjective following "proved" just like that?

You can use it like that without to be,or with it.

    Re: proved rather incompetent

To me, quite useless means completely useless, which is not the same as rather incompetent.

Rather badly comes closer to it.

It's not a good exercise in my opinion, especially if all the sentences failed to end with full stops.

I agree; I had missed that point when answering.
