    I came across the following conversation in a film. Woyld you please tell me the menaing of "I hate to break it to you"?

    Spanky: I think you just have sex with girls all time?

    Jimmy: I hate to break it to you, Spanky, but we're really just regular guys.

    This is usually said when telling someone what they had previously thought or believed was wrong.
    "I hate to break it to you, Stanley, but that woman at the bar is actually a man wearing makeup and a wig."

    You could paraphrase like this: "I hate to tell you this, but....."
