What does "putting your careers on the line" mean?

Does it mean "in the danger"?

    Context:

To all of you, for your courage and for putting your careers on the line that fateful day, March 5, 1973.
    You saved my life.

Yes, but in danger, not in the danger.

The metaphorical 'line' separated what was safe from what was dangerous.
