    Is a 'what' nedded?

    Dear Forum Users,

Could anyone please tell me whether a 'what' is needed in this sentence:

The irony in this sentence is used to express a resentment on the part of the speaker stronger than what? its literal counterpart would imply.

    Thank you very much.

    Csika

    It's optional.

    Compare:

'My house cost more than (what) yours did'.
