    parenthesis

    Dear Forum Users,

I am writing an essay in which I quote a longer text in which I insert some comments in paretheses. I also indicate emphasis in the last of the additions:

"Chuck Norris (1995: 241) argues that “the explicitly negated expression (hot) functions as the central member of the set whose negation allows for the less central (or approximate) members (and not the distant marginal ones) to take over”

When I explain the additions and the emphasis, can I say:

(the additions in all the three parentheses and the emphasis in the third ones??? are mine)

    Thank you.

    Csika

    Re: parenthesis

I don't think you should do it that way. I would use square brackets, and write immediately afterwards: "(The comments within square brackets are mine.)" Square brackets have been used traditionally by writers to inserts their own comments.

You don't need to say the emphasis is yours if it occurs within square brackets - it's obviously yours.
If the third parenthetical phrase was the author's and you just emphasised it, you should leave it in round brackets, and after, write, "(The comments within square brackets and the emphasis are mine.)"
