    Confusing Article Problems

Hi, I found these problems from a book about grammar. Please help me improve the two sentences below by changing the articles.

    Sentence 1:

The great source of a loose style, in opposition to precision, is the injudicious use of those words termed synonymous.

    Sentence 2:

The great source of a loose style, in opposition to precision, is the injudicious use of the words termed synonymous.

    Thank you

    Re: Confusing Article Problems

There is a principle to be applied here: The articles can seldom be put one for the other, without gross impropriety; and either is of course to be preferred to the other, as it better suits the sense.

Which grammar book is this? Who's making you study it? You need a more up-to-date one.

The sentences in post #1 have the same meaning—whatever that is!

Note that you can use the Edit button to add to an earlier post; you don't need to start a new one.

I think the lines are from the lectures of Hugh Blair, published in 1783.

    Re: Confusing Article Problems

It's a book authored by Goold Brown.

The language style is old but I don't think the knowledge taught is outdated. In fact, I find the explanations in the book, about usage of articles, make much more sense and detailed than most normal grammar books recommended by English teachers that I have ever studied.

One usage of articles that isn't quite clearly explained is what I have described above.
