Question which/that relative clauses - exam marking question

    Hello all,

This is my first post, although I have read through quite a few and found the discussion extremely interesting. I teach English at a business school in the Netherlands. I'm currently marking exams from our first year students who are expected to be competent in English but don't need to be experts. The exam and key were made by a colleague and I am not sure about one of the answers. The students are supposed to fill in all possible relative pronouns and commas if necessary:

"The figures ...................... I show during my presentation reflect this year's increase in profits."

The answer key has the following as the only correct answer:

"The figures, which I show during my presentation, reflect this year's increase in profits."

I agree this is one correct answer (if you view the presentation bit as extra information). However, I believe there are more (if you view the presentation bit as necessary information specifying which figures are being referred to):

"The figure which I show during my presentation..."
"The figures that I show during my presentation..."
"The figures I show during my presentation..."

I am very curious to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance!

Re: Help with marking exam question pretty please

Welcome to the forums, emmaleeann. I expect you will feel like answering questions here soon.

I agree with you. My preference is for no relative pronoun in that sentence.

We do appreciate more helpful thread titles. Relative pronouns or which/that would have been good for this.

One advantage of a good title is that the forum software can identify Similar Threads. The ones shown below are quite useless to you.

Re: which/that relative clauses - exam marking question

Thank you for the tip about the subject line, Rover. I look forward to answering questions as well. This will be a nice outlet as I think my colleagues are rather frustrated with my endless grammar discussions.
