panty vs underpants

In Korea, we have a lot of adopted words from English, and one of them is "팬티" meaning underpants. But we never say "underpants", but "panty" that refers to a short basic underwear for your lower-body. I found the dictionary definition for "panty" that says it's only for kids and women.
So which is more common between "panty" and "underpants"?

I used these terms as a doctor for 25 years, and never had problems with my choice.

Well, they are the terms as I use them, in AusE; they are common. It's not the only way. I'm pretty sure we've had quite a few underpants threads that you should search for for more opinions - eg. briefs, knickers, jocks, jockettes.

'Shorts' as in underpants are not called "short pants". Short pants are an outer wear.

I'll let an American explain "shorts" as underwear. I never use the term that way.

Many people in Britain use 'pants' for the underwear of both sexes, though many other words are also used. We don't often speak of 'panties' for the women's version.
