    Paraphrase

    Dear teachers,

What's the paraphrase of the underlined part in the following sentence?

"The beauty is skin deep, or so goes the old adage."

    Thanks

    NOT A TEACHER

The beauty is skin deep, or so says the old proverb.

    Re: Paraphrase

Or that's what people have been saying for a long time about beauty - without saying whether it's true or not.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

I've only ever heard 'Beauty is skin deep'.
