Hello.:-D

I have a question about the song lyric.

"You said the brains I had went to my head."

1. brains: intelligence brain - Definition and pronunciation | Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary at OxfordLearnersDictionaries.com
2. go to one's head: to make you feel too proud of yourself in a way that other people find annoying (arrogant) head - Definition and pronunciation | Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary at OxfordLearnersDictionaries.com

So, the song lyric might mean something like:

"You said I was behaving arrogantly because of my intelligence." (- not natural)
"You said I was behaving with some intellectual arrogance. "(- not natural, either?)

Am I on the right track?

Yes you are.

To have brains means to be intelligent, and for something to go to your head it means to feed your ego, increase your pride, stoke your self-worth, etc.

But there's also an obvious pun in that his brain is supposed to be in his head. The rest of the song might highlight that meaning.

Thank you for your replies, everybody.:-D
Well, I'm not sure about "The Zombies", but it is actually from a song called 'Don't Look Back In Anger' by "Oasis".
(You've got it right, emsr2d2!:-D)
You can read the lyrics here: Don't Look Back In Anger Lyrics - Oasis
It is a pun, indeed! I didn't notice it. (Thank you for pointing it out, Raymott.)
I first thought it must be an idiomatic expression, but I couldn't find the collocations of 'brains' and 'go to one's head'.
So, I tried understanding them separately.
Incidentally, I've found this: http: Bed-In - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The introduction of the song sounds a lot like "Imagine" by John Lennon, which makes me feel Noel Gallagher's great respect and admiration for him.

I know the song pretty well and I have always assumed that it was just a pun, exactly as explained by konungursvia and Raymott.

And you admit that? In public?

Shock horror - I rather like Oasis! Well, I like their music. The Gallagher brothers were/are a nightmare and it almost disappointed me that such unpleasant people should make music I was prepared to pay for and listen to but there it is!
