    1. They tell us what a wonderful child we have.

    2. They tell us that what a wonderful child we have.


    I wonder whether sentence 2 is grammatical.

    No. They tell us that we have a wonderful child.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    I agree with Barb that sentence 2 is not correct. Her alternative version is clear. However, I just wanted to make sure that you are aware that sentence 1 is absolutely fine.
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
