we had got a foothold on the market

    Hello,

Here is a part of the assignment my students turned in:
"- And you remember all audits left us with a clean bill of health.
    - Not surprising. The team has always been up to their eyes in work. Customers' trust doesn`t fall into your lap for nothing.
    - But what happened? People talk your former Sales Manager`s got a finger in the pie.
    - Oh, yes. One day he decided we had got a foothold on the market and could milk much more. He was sure people would buy from us whatever it is and said it was time we started raising prices."

First, I would say "People are talking your former Sales Manager got a finger in the pie."
Second, "he decided we had got a foothold in the market".

    What is your opinion?

    Thank you in advance.

"People are saying (that) your former Sales Manager's got a finger in the pie".
    or
"People say (that) your former Sales Manager's got a finger in the pie".

Also possible: "People are talking, they say your former etc..." Here, "talking" has a sense similar to "gossiping".

".. he decided we had got a foothold in the market" is correct.

Note: nobody ever 'talks that'. It is simply wrong.
