    predecessor

I have trouble understanding the "predecessor" in the following context? I know its literal meaning.

1996, ... Hassan met Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The duo was then working on a small side project: the search engine predecessor to Google. Hassan helped with the code, and the Google founders issued him shares.

    Thank you.

Here it refers to the search engine that came before Google. It might have been an earlier version of the Google search engine but wasn't known as Google or it might have been a completely different search engine.

    I hope this helps.

    Re: predecessor

The search engine that preceded Google. Probably part of the code, or some of the ideas employed, were later used in creating Google.

I'm not sure whether "search engine" or "predecessor" is the adjective here though. Both ideas seem strange to me.
