    directory information calls

Please make the following in red clear for me.

Whether it's the lightening-fast response of the Google search engine or the speech recognition used for directory information calls, we are already AI (artificial intelligence) codependent.

In the above, does "directory" refer to "telephone directory" and "calls" refer to "phone calls"? What does the phrase mean?

    Thank you.

    Re: directory information calls

You can call a phone number (411 in some areas of the US) and find out the phone number of a party you are trying to reach. This is called "directory assistance" as I know it, but it seems "directory information" is another term for it.

These now work on voice recognition. So you say "Joe's Pizza" in "Smithburg" and the computer finds the number for you.
