    nothing = anything?

    Context:

    “They don’t like nothing about Barack Obama,” Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) told the audience, rattling off opposition to both his policies but also criticism of the redecoration of the Oval Office, the first couple’s outings and questions about the president’s place of birth.

    It should be "anything".

    I would say it's an unintentional double negative.

    'Nothing' never equals 'anything'.

    Double negative is positive. That's not what the speaker intended to say.

    Some people use double negatives, even though they don't mean it in as in "two negatives make a positive". For example:

    I ain't done nothing (= I haven't done anything).
    I ain't seen nobody (= I haven't seen anybody).

    You could even go one step further, and use three negatives as in

    I ain't done nothing to nobody.
