"Humane" means "showing compassion or sympathy", which is what I think they mean here. However, "humane" can be used to mean "humanistic", though that's a less frequent usage. Either way, the concepts behind both words are so closely related that not much meaning is lost should you opt for the "wrong" definition. Humanism is about treating people with dignity, respect, and compassion, in other words, treating people humanely.
