Question I got a problem about the second conditional

    Hi, everyone.

I know that the basic structure of the second conditional is "if sb were..., sb would ..."

But what if I want to use the word "do" instead of "would"?

    Should I say

"If the homework were stupid, do I still need to finish it?"

    or

"If the homework were stupid, did I still need to finish it?"

By the way, in the second conditional, can I use some other word like "may", "should" instead of "would"?

Re: I got a problem about the second conditional

Your two sentences are not acceptable. Conditional questions use the same verb-forms as statements:

If the homework were stupid I would not need to do/finish it.
If the homework were stupid, would I still need to do/finish it?

So does that mean I can only "would" in the second conditional? Can I use some words else like "should" or "may" instead of "would"?

If you wanted to, you could use could, might and should.
