multiple question for multiple-choice questions

I have a question about the types of test questions.
When I went to a college in Canada, my classmates used to say "free question" for "essay questions" and "multiple question" for "multiple-choice questions". Which term is correct for each type?
Did they say "multiple question" just briefly to mean "multiple-choice questions"?

"multiple choice question/examination" is in any case correct. Multiple choice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't know about "multiple question", it doesn't carry the same meaning IMO, the word "choice" has to be in it, I think.

There is only one question (and not multiple), but there are several answers you can choose.

"Free question" is not a term that is used at my univerisity. It makes little sense to me because the term implies that you're getting the question for free.

I have heard of "free-response questions" and "essay questions". That is what they're usually called.

My current university is indeed a Dutch univeristy. However, "free-response question" and "essay question" are terms that are used everywhere, be it in North America or elsewhere in the world.
