get caught unless by his mother...

    Hi there,

Basically, I know the meaning of the word "unless", but I really don't get it in the following context, could anyone help me out?

Thank you very much in advance.

"He likes to cruise the Internet for porn films, but sometimes he has concerns about doing so. It wan't that he was afraid of getting caught unless by his mother and she didn't bother for years to check on where he went in real life--never mind where he went on his computer......"

This strikes me as a little ambiguous.
    I'm not sure if:
he feels he might be caught but isn't afraid of that, except if it's his mother who catches him
he doesn't feel he might be caught, except if his mother catches him, but that seems unlikely.

Either way, "unless" means "except if".
