Is "so as to" used properly here?

    Context:

To impress a reader, one has to highlight the key point so as to catch the eye of the reader.

Yes, it is. It means "in order to".

Can I say it more simply by "To impress a reader, one has to highlight the key point to catch the eye of the reader."?
Is there any difference in meaning between them?
    Thank you!
