    entirely different calculus...

This is about politicians' double-sided aspects of favoring their personal life, while dismissing climate change. "Calculus" is a math area, so did the writer mistake it for "calculation"?

    330-149
ex)As the evidence of the growing risks of climate change mounted over the last three decades, the political response nonetheless was a combination of denial and delay....In the meantime, months, years, and decades slipped away. Some chose to dismiss the evidence as "doom and gloom", but as individuals they lived by an entirely different calculus...

It probably a system for calculating that was at odds with their public pronouncements.

    Re: entirely different calculus...

I have to say that I have never seen or used "calculus" that way before. It was just a math class.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

And I liked his post that explained it, so perhaps I need to say "I had never before seen" instead of "I have never seen."
