    quotation

    Dear native speakers,

what does the following quotation mean?

The English language was carefully, carefully cobbled together by three blind dudes and a German dictionary.

    thanks.

    Re: quotation

It looks like a metaphor. Perhaps, by the "dudes" the three main periods of the English language history are meant? And "a Germanic dictionary" is a metaphoric name for Germanic invaders of the 5th century AD?

No. It's just a humorous comment on the difficulties of the English language. See this cartoon.

    Re: quotation

    Dear 5jj,

Thanks for your reply. Don't you think that "three blind dudes" here means the three tribes "Angles, Saxons and Jutes" that attacked the British island?

You are trying to read far too much into this. He could just as easily said "four crazy guys'.
