    why do it

    Dear teachers,

This is from my grammar book:

Can you tell me why do it?

My question is: is the word do used correctly? Shouldn't the sentence be: Can you tell me why you do it?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Re: why do it

    Hi,

I believe it means 'Can you tell me why I/we should do it?' rather than '... why you do it?'

    Re: why do it

Which section of your grammar book does this come from and what teaching point is being made?

    Re: why do it

    Hi Rover,
It's of infinitives. It reads wh- words can be followed by "to do". For example, where to eat, what to do. But if the wh- words is why then it can be followed by do. Thus Can you tell me why do it?

    Re: why do it

    I'm still confused.

If your grammar book is saying that 'Can you tell me why do it?' is correct English, you need to get a better book.
