    searches were negative

    Teacher, are these sentences okay?

We have not been able to contact Dr. Wu. The postman returned our letter to Dr. Wu saying he has moved to a new address. We tried to look for his address on the internet but our searches were negative.

    NOT A TEACHER

Since nobody has responded to this thread, I thought I'd share my two cents.

I don't see any errors, but I don't know if you can say, 'our searches were negative'. Negative search seems to mean something else. I would say instead:

We tried to look for his address on the internet but we couldn't find it.

Insted of negative, substitute futile, fruitlless or in vain.

Or: "We looked for/tried to find his address on the internet but our searches were unsuccessful."
