    (the) Romanov(s) (dynasty)

    Hi,

I'm always confusing the usage of the definite article in the following sentences. Please tell me which options are correct:

Nicholas II was the last member of the Romanov dynasty
Nicholas II was the last member of the Romanovs dynasty
Nicholas II was the last member of the Romanovs

In some cases we can omit the word "dynasty", but I'm not sure what we need to do with the article in this case.

    Thanks

    (Not a Teacher)

I'd use either the first or the third sentence. When your talking about a particular family by name, let's say their last name is Smith, you say "the Smiths". However, if you want to talk about their dynasty, you say "the Smith dynasty" without pluralizing the name.

Milan, please stop bumping your questions after such a short time. Questions in this forum are answered by volunteers in their free time. When somebody bumps a question after a short time, we receive the message "Hurry up, I am waiting". That might be fair enough if you were paying for a service, but you're not.

We are happy to give our time and what knowledge we have, but we don't like being asked to give it quickly.
