    stand/run (for) the president

    Hi,

When a person wants to become a candidate for the position of a president what's the best way of conveying this idea?

He wants to run for the president
He wants to run the president
He wants to stand for the president
He wants to stand the president

    Thanks a lot

...or 'He wants to stand for the presidency'.

Yes, before becoming the sitting President, the candidate has to stand and run. It's a gruelling event.

We use "run" for office in AmE, not "stand."

    I agree with SoothingDave.

"Running for president" leaves little time to "stand" around!
