I just neede a (hint, trigger,...?) to studyy harder.

    Hi
    Consider this situation:
    - I had told you before several times to study harder.
    - Yeah! I should've listened to you. However, failing that exam was just a ......... I needed to study much harder.

What can we say here? a hint, a sign, a trigger, a slap, etc?
    Thanks a million.
Being a non-native teacher, I'm so thrilled being in such a superb forum.

Just the kick I needed, just the push ... there are a few things you could say, but use "the" here.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
