Can someone please explain the difference between these two nouns to me?

I am not sure what is correct to fill in the following blans.

1.......................of the war will mean shortage of food . Continuance/ continuation ?

2.The Baltic Sea is a ........................of the North sea . Continuance/ Continuation ?

Continuance is interchangeable with continuation in some of its senses. However, only continuance is used to refer to the duration of a state or condition, as in his continuance in office. Continuation applies especially to prolongation or resumption of action (a continuation of the meeting) or to physical extension (the continuation of the street). The continuation of a story is that part of the story following a break in its narration.

Thanks. I have looked them up but my problem is that according to that is this sentence wrong?

The continuation of war by other means...

So Can I say that for the first sentence "..........of the war will mean shortage of food." both continuation and continuance are correct?
