    One of the best....

    Hello Teachers

I am confused with this sentence 'This is one of the best movies.' Best is used as a superlative for good and there can only be one 'best'. So does that mean the above sentence is wrong? I've seen many sentences like that. Please advise.

    Re: One of the best....

The phrase is fine- we can think of a number of movies as being special and above the rest. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, but K2 is one of the highest. That is correct, but it would be wrong to say that K2 (the second highest) is the highest mountain.

    NOT A TEACHER

    Hello, Sophia:

Thank you so much for your question. The "better/best" question has long confused me. So, like you, I was happy to get the answer from the Editor.

    *****

I was moved to do some googling and thought that you would like to know the results.

    1. The Grammar Logs #319 has an interesting discussion.

    a. It tells us that I can say, "My math class has the best math students in the school." So since Dilbert is in that

class, we could say, "Dilbert is one of the best math students." The article explains that the term "best" can be

collective; it can mean "of the most excellent kind."

    2. Wikipediatalk WikiProject Grammar also had something that might interest you.

    a. Is Albert Pujois one of the better players?
    b. Is Albert Pujois one of the best players?

Well, the expert there believes that both are "grammatically correct."

    S/he sees this difference:

Sentence "a" = He is in the upper levels of the game. (top 20%? 15%? 30%?)

Sentence "b" = He is among the elite.

    HAVE A NICE DAY!
